I have mentioned before that I work communications for a non-profit organization. In my role, one of the most important tasks is to manage our social profiles. My favorite part!

In my time here I have come across many non-profit organizations that have the WORST looking social profiles ever.

Is social media important for non-profit organizations?

The short answer is YEEEEESSS!!!

A good Facebook page can even take the place of a website!

I know many non-profit organizations have a limited and or restricted budget, but as part of the everyday task for employees, it is important to optimize social media.

There needs to be not only someone actively working to better the social presence of the organization but also a plan to make it work long-term.

What should be in this plan?

  • A goal: What do you want to accomplish with the communications effort? Awareness? Donations? Volunteers?
  • A clear message: What is your organization about? What cause can users identify with? What do you want them to know about your organization?
  • METRICS!: One of the most important things your social media plan needs is a way to measure its effectiveness. For example, if you are looking for volunteers for an event, how many showed up because of the ad on Facebook. Another can be how many followers you gained after a certain promotion.
  • Budget: There is no way around it. From personnel time to paid promotions it needs to be included in the macro strategic plan for the organization. The good thing about social media is that you don’t need to invest a lot to get good results. It’s all about knowing.
  • A consistency plan: When you decide to take on a social media platform, there needs to be a plan to keep up with creating a distributing content. If you post whenever users are going to be very confused. And if you post once in a while users might even think the organization is not even working anymore.

Don’t forget to be consistent with the message, the posting schedule and to keep up to date with the trends within the platform.

I believe that non-profit organizations are a key element into having that future activist are fighting hard to accomplish. That is why I am passionate about helping non-profit organizations reach their communications goals. For this purpose, I have created a special social media offer just for non-profit organizations.
